Trees and pavement

Urban trees have to deal with a lot of stressors: pollution, poor air quality, and lots of pavement, among others. We’ve all seen tree roots buckling pavement, which isn’t good for the trees and isn’t good for the sidewalks. Now, some areas are installing a sort of flexible “pavement” around large old trees, which allows for some expansion without the cracking. See below for pictures of one spot in our neighborhood!
