Wandering Youngsters

October 6, 2011

A mountain lion was found (captured, and soon-to-be released) on the Boulder campus of Colorado University recently. This is not uncommon – during the fall, cubs or pups from the current year’s litter are encouraged to leave their home territory (or thrown out, depending on how you want to look at it!). Sometimes while searching for new, suitable digs, they end up in less than desirable places, such as the middle of downtown Chicago (do you remember the Quizno’s coyote from a few years ago?) or a residential hall area in Boulder. This is often cause for concern by residents, who are less than thrilled with seeing a bear cub (for example) in their suburban community. It’s important to keep in mind that they’ll move on eventually (although sometimes they might need a helping hand).
